Of course you can’t enjoy Dokha without the means to smoke it!  Midwakh pipes (sometimes spelled Medwakh or Medwah) have been around for centuries in some form, however nowadays you can choose from a myriad of shapes and sizes, colours and materials.

A Little About the History of Midwakh Pipes

The Midwakh: An ancient smoking tradition gains in popularity

The origins of the Midwakh can be traced back centuries to the Bedouin tribes of the Arabian Peninsula. This slender pipe was crafted using natural materials readily available in the region, such as wood and bone. It served as a portable and practical tool for smoking various substances, including herbs and tobacco.  Move forward a few centuries and this traditional smoking pipe is commonly used in countries like the United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Saudi Arabia.

As populations have more freedom to travel, this ancient smoking tradition has captured the interest of new generations in various parts of the world.

Understanding the Midwakh

The Midwah pipe is not just a tool; it’s an essential companion that enhances the Dokha smoking experience.

Although there are no rules around what makes a tobacco pipe a Midwakh, the style is very distinctive. Most notably, the pipe bowl tends to be much smaller than Western tobacco pipes, as the Dokha itself is cut more finely and less is needed to be smoked. They’re traditionally around 6inches long, however one of our most popular Midwakh pipes is called the Footlong – 12inches, for the exhibitionists amongst us!

Midwakh pipes are often handmade, allowing for creativity and style in the crafting process – dimensions and design vary to create truly unique pieces for the discerning smoker. Crafted from a variety of materials including various wood types, bone, metals and resins, the bowl ring and stem are usually made from metal.  Some are inscribed with symbols, such as a falcon similar to the UAE coat of arms.

Anatomy of a Midwakh Pipe

Midwakh pipes usually have an slightly enlarged heel just below the bowl to hold it steady whilst lighting. The ‘heel’ is attached to a small bowl, sized for a single hit, which in turn is linked to the shaft.  The heel allows you to easily grip the pipe without burning yourself and offers a stylish flare to your Midwakh. Connected to the end of the shaft is the mouthpiece, which usually supports a filter.

Bowl size can affect the intensity of the hit and therefore how much Dokha you smoke in a week. The bowl size can also affect how easily you can fill the bowl. Larger bowls tend to be easier to fill, burn slower and cooler, whereas smaller bowls tend to be more difficult to fill, smoke faster and hotter.  At the end of the day it’s all about personal preference!

The length of the shaft can also determine the heat from the smoke pulled through from the bowl to the mouthpiece. A longer shaft will cool the smoke, but will also provide more resistance to gain the same hit. This is also where the diameter of the air passage comes into play. Along with the filter, the air passage diameter plays a massive role in determining the volume of smoke you inhale. The wider diameter equals more smoke. That’s why most Midwakh Pipes are a standard 6inches in length, and the diameter of the internal stem hole and those in the filters are optimised for that length.

How to Use and Clean Your Medwakh

Pair your chosen Midwakh pipe with your favourite Dokha tobacco blend for a smooth, rich smoking experience.  Cleaning is simple. Use either a fabric pipe cleaner or a bristle pipe cleaner. If you use a bristle cleaner, you can clean it with hot soapy water and reuse it. Just make sure it’s completely dry before your next smoke. Moisture left inside the stem can lead to clogging from tobacco flakes.  Use a filter on the end of your Midwakh pipes to catch random flakes from entering your mouth.  Using a filter doesn’t impede the flavour or strength of the tobacco but offers a more mellow smoking experience.

Important Care Notice

If you choose an animal bone or ceramic Midwakh, (also spelled Medwakh) never tap or bang the bowl or stem of the pipe to remove old tobacco residue, as both bone and ceramic are fragile materials. This action could easily crack either the bowl or stem so always use a pipe cleaner or cleaning spray to clear the bowl and stem. If you do choose to use ‘Falcon Spray’, please ensure that the bowl and stem are properly dry before re-use, to ensure the stem in particular doesn’t become clogged.

As every pipe is carefully inspected before dispatch, any cracks or damage caused by ‘tapping’ will negate refunds or exchanges.
