What is Dokha, Medwakhs and their Accessories explained.
What is Dokha? I hear you asking. Very popular in the Middle East for many decades, Dokha is the pure, natural and original tender Arabic tobacco. Unlike most tobaccos, Dokha is not fire cured and cut, but dried in the arid desert region where it is grown. It’s finely ground in a timely delicate manner to preserve the content of the tobacco. It’s strength, freshness and pure flavour is a direct result of the environment it’s grown and harvested in.
The tobacco, is strung up by the stalks and left hanging to dry on wooden battens in barn-like structures in the arid dessert air. Due to the lesser degree of processing, Dokha tobacco appears essentially unaltered. This allows it to maintain the green coloration of the natural plant.
We’re passionate about bringing quality tobacco products to your doorstep!
In the past, local people of desert regions smoked Dokha because it gave them a stimulating and comforting head rush. However, since its origin, the art of cultivating Dokha tobacco has come a long way, through generations upon generations tending to this crop, to reward us with truly superior tobaccos in the present day.
By comparison, most smokers who have ventured to sample Dokha, are intrigued by its particular quality, the often intense satisfaction it provides to the smoker and the unique flavour, versus cigarettes, cigars or other pipe tobaccos.
Our customers are comforted to know that the Dokha tobaccos we provide are pure and natural – grown using organic methods, irrigated with only fresh water. Our Dokha tobaccos are free from chemical additives such as pesticides and herbicides, found in most other western smoking products. Due to the nature in which Dokha is both prepared and smoked, our customers are also pleasantly surprised to note that smoking Dokha doesn’t impart a residual and often foul odour associated with most tobaccos.
Due to health considerations, we have learned that a large number of our customers decided to exclusively smoke Dokha, as it causes them to physically smoke less tobacco – (compare approximately 1.4 to 1.9 grams of tobacco contained within a cigarette versus 0.13 to 0.15 grams per smoke with Dokha). Also, with smoking less tobacco through the filtered Medwakh pipe, the amount of tar reaching the lungs is further reduced when they maintain their same smoking habit.
So we don’t mislead you, we are inclined to mention here that Enjoy Dokha Ltd does not advocate the smoking of any tobacco product – however, if you are intending to continue smoking, then you should consider that Dokha may be less injurious to your health – but it’s still tobacco.
Dokha is enjoyed with the use of a small, crafted smoking pipe called a Medwakh (sometimes spelt Midwakh). Originally, hollowed animal bones were used as pipes, however, craftsmen also made pipes using different types of exotic wood, among other materials, as a sign of prestige and status. Just as with any smoking device, Medwakhs are offered in a range of styles and lengths, either for your individual preference, or a sense of nostalgia. Consider each Medwakh as handcrafted artistry, that you would feel proud to own and display, as you enjoy your pastime…
We hope the above description helps to clarify what you may have heard about Dokha Arabic tobacco and Medwakh pipes, and we invite you to try for yourself one of our remarkable premium tobacco blends, which offers delight to the true smoking connoisseur (or just that wild guy or gal with a taste for enjoyment of life – in all of its forms).
Resultant blends are typically classified as Light (Blue) Dokha, Medium (Gold) Dokha, or Hot (Red) Dokha.
Medwakh, also spelled Midwakh, is a small smoking pipe of Arabian origin, in which Dokha, a sifted Arabic tobacco product, is smoked.
The bowl of a Medwakh pipe is typically smaller than that of a traditional western tobacco pipe. It is usually loaded by dipping the bowl into a container of Dokha flakes.
Medwakh pipes are primarily produced in the United Arab Emirates, and are especially popular in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.
Medwakh pipes are often custom made, allowing the smoker to specify the dimensions and style design. Medwakh pipes are crafted from a variety of materials including wood, bone, base metal, marble, steel, gold, silver, resin or glass. They may incorporate precious stones such as diamonds, gemstones or rings of precious metal inscribed with symbols, such as a falcon, similar to the one shown in the UAE Coat of Arms. The pipe may be crafted to resemble a dromedary camel, a highly revered animal in the UAE; the opening of the bowl shaped as the camel’s mouth, with a small hole connected to a metal shaft inside the body of the pipe to conduct the smoke to the user.
Amongst the many modern variations of the Medwakh pipe, some are covertly disguised as pens, some can be split apart for cleaning purposes. Most Medwakh pipes however are crafted out of wood and have a mouthpiece specifically sized to fit a plastic filter to reduce the flow of any unwanted tobacco particles.
Most people like to express their individuality with their Medwakh pipes – this is why Enjoy Dokha have over 30 different designs and styles to choose from.
Yes, Dokha is 100% legal, as long as you are over the legal smoking age in the country that you reside in. For example, in the UK the legal smoking age is 18 years old.
Dokha is an Arabic pipe tobacco that is unaltered from it’s natural state during the growing and harvesting process. Unlike many other tobacco products currently available, particularly western tobaccos, Dokha tobacco supplied by Enjoy Dokha is organically grown, using only fresh water and desert sunshine – without the use of pesticides, herbicides or any other chemical additive to extend it’s shelf life, taste or behaviour when lit.
Dokha is a tobacco product and smoking tobacco can be injurious to your health.
When smoked through the Medwakh, you will get a ‘Buzz’ feeling which lasts approximately 30 seconds, depending on your nicotine tolerance. You could compare a bowl of Dokha to an Espresso Coffee – both are concentrated, both are a little intense and both leave you with an elated feeling afterwards…
Many decide to exclusively smoke Dokha as it causes them to physically smoke less tobacco (compare approximately 1.4 to 1.9 grams of tobacco contained within a cigarette versus 0.13 to 0.15 grams per smoke with Dokha). Also, smoking less tobacco through a filtered Medwakh pipe, the amount of impurities reaching the lungs is further limited when maintaining the same smoking habit. So we don’t mislead you, we are inclined to mention here that we don’t advocate smoking at all, however, if you continue to choose to smoke then perhaps Dokha Arabic tobacco might be the better option, but it’s still tobacco!
As you try different Dokha blends, you will notice the strengths of Dokha are more complex than just 3 differing categories.
To keep things simple, there are 3 different types of Dokha tobacco blends. These are categorised as Light (Blue) Dokha, Medium (Gold) Dokha and Hot (Red) Dokha.
Traditionally, Light (Blue) Dokha is very smooth on inhale and exhale and offers a light buzz for beginners new to Dokha. Medium (Gold) Dokha offers a more sustained relaxing buzz that will leave you tingling from the true smoking experience. Hot (Red) Dokha, only recommended for seasoned Dokha smokers, offers a rush of heat on inhale, followed by a long drawn out strong buzz that will leave you probably wanting to sit down for a while…
Cleaning your Medwakh pipe is important. It not only looks after your Medwakh pipe, making it last longer, but it also ensures a good buzz every time you smoke.
Follow these quick steps to keep your Medwakh pipe’s air flow free!
- Take your filter off the Medwakh pipe.
- Insert your fabric/bristle pipe cleaner through the pipe until you can see it in the bowl at the end. Bend the end of the fabric pipe cleaner that is poking out of your pipe 90 degrees or use the knub of the bristle pipe cleaner and twist it around to clear any blockages.
- Remove the cleaner, wipe the end with a paper towel and blow through the pipe to remove any particles left in the Medwakh airway.
- Scrape the bowl of the pipe clean with a new pipe cleaner or paper towel.
- Lastly, blow one more time through the Medwakh, and apply a new filter.
This may seem like a long process but after a few times you will breeze through it quickly. Follow these simple steps and your Medwakh pipe will thank you for it!
Traditionally Medwakh pipes use a filter tip to help filter out any tiny tobacco particles and smoke impurities before inhaling.
Rarely will you see someone smoking Dokha though a Medwakh pipe without one! There are many different types of filter tips available from Enjoy Dokha; you can choose a filter with increased airflow or a reduced airflow. You can also choose your filters based on filtration materials such as internal cotton, charcoal and silicon beads or a combination of both.
Have a look at our Filter tip section to see which will be best for you.

We have chosen to supply this particular product this way because of customer feedback, intimating it was hard to manage one big bottle. Supplying the larger quantity of Dokha in smaller bottles ensures your Dokha remains fresh for the next time you wish to smoke…
1ml does not equal 1gram because Dokha is lighter in weight and less dense than water, for example. See the next FAQ for a more in depth answer to this.
No, They are two different things.
1 ml (millilitre) is a ‘volume‘, it measures how much three-dimensional space an object occupies. 1g (gram) is a ‘mass‘, it measures how much material an object contains.
Somethings are more ‘dense‘, meaning that the same amount of material occupies a smaller space – think of metal, for example. Somethings are less dense – the same amount of material occupies a huge space – hydrogen gas in room temperature and atmospheric pressure, for example.
It happens that 1ml volume of pure water at 4.0° Celsius (39.2° Fahrenheit) contains very close to 1g of material (0.9998395g). This is why people sometimes confuse the two quantities.
If you order for example a 250ml / 70gram bottle then the weight of the contents is 70grams. This is because Dokha is light in weight as apposed to water which is heavier, if put in the same container – everything has a different density and thus different weights.
Depending on how much you pack your Medwakh pipe bowl
The average Dokha smoker will be able to get between 100 and 150 smokes from a standard 50ml /14gram bottle of Dokha.

When we ship parcels internationally, they go through customs clearance before delivery.
Because the parcels are usually quite small, a lot of the time they will pass through Customs without any charges being levied, however, we cannot guarantee this with every parcel shipment.
If taxes and duties are raised for your parcel, this is done by your country’s Government and not by Enjoy Dokha. As a consequence, we have no control over this. If there are fees to be paid they are often for a small amount, but this can depend on your country’s duty rate and the monetary value of your order. Generally, Enjoy Dokha has an amicable relationship with Customs so we can usually sort out any issues locally very quickly – we do all we can to minimize any disruption and inconvenience to you, the customer.
If any import taxes are raised, this is to be paid by the customer and not Enjoy Dokha.
