From Seed to Shelf – How Dokha is Grown
Arabic tobacco (Dokha) is grown at high altitude across the Middle East, benefiting from cool nights, intense daytime sun, and clean water irrigation. Farmers regulate water flow with small dams, helping the plants thrive. Growing the delicate tobacco plants at high altitude brings a unique flavour to the tobacco leaves, as they can rest in the cool of the evening/nights and grow vigorously during the day in the intense sunlight and heat. These conditions directly influence the rich flavour of local blends.
Crops are generally grown in tiny subplots called ‘yelba’ that measure around two to three metres each. This method of cultivation allows the artisan growers to easily spot if there is any potential risk of pests or disease amongst the plants. The seeds are sewn in December and the plants are harvested in August when they are dried in open-sided barn-like structures. Instead of fire-curing and cutting, farmers hang the leaves in these structures to dry naturally. This process draws nicotine to the leaf tips.
While not certified organic, Dokha grows without chemicals or additives, making it a natural choice for a cleaner smoke. The leaves keep their green-brown colour and are blended into Light cold (Blue), Medium warm (Gold), or Hot (red) blends.
Once fully dried the leaves are stripped from the stalks and sorted into ‘top leaves’, ‘middle leaves’ and ‘bottom leaves’ as the different strengths of Dokha depend on where the leaves have been picked from the plant. Most local farmers do grow other crops such as mango, oranges and date palms. They also have bee hives from which they collect honey.

These basic filters have a small piece of white cotton/sponge to trap any impurities from reaching your mouth. Fabric pipe cleaners and Bristle pipe cleaners:
50pk or 100pk of white fabric pipe cleaners – more for your money than normal packs as the more you buy the cheaper they become…
These pipe cleaners are bendable and go down the full length of shaft.
Bristle Pipe Cleaners:
Replace or wash with soapy water so you can re-use them, however be sure they are completely dry before inserting them down the stem of your Medwakh, otherwise your tobacco will stick to the sides along the stem and render your pipe unusable.
