Dokha Starter Kits

Dokha Starter Kits are very popular with Dokha smokers, because they contain everything that they use to enjoy their favourite pastime in one colourful pouch, when they are on the go…

It’s probably best if you have some knowledge of what you are purchasing before delving into something you don’t know much about, and spending money on the wrong products, so here is a synopsis of what is involved if you want to either start smoking Dokha or if you are a regular Dokha smoker…

What is Dokha made from?

Dokha is the pure, natural and original tender leaf Arabic tobacco. Unlike most Western tobaccos, Dokha is not fire cured and cut, but dried in the arid mountainous desert regions of the UAE. It’s finely ground in a timely manner to preserve the strength, freshness and pure flavour of the tobacco.

Due to the lesser degree of processing, Dokha tobacco essentially appears unaltered from the plant leaves grown in the field, maintaining the green/brown coloration of the natural plant.  That is one of the main reasons why we have so many return customers – from seed to shelf with nothing added and nothing taken away…

Typically Dokha is grown on plateau fields in the mountainous regions of the UAE and Oman. There are complex irrigation systems deployed which are controlled manually.  Without these irrigation systems the plants would die as the region is essentially arid desert.

The plants are tended by local farmers, with good knowledge of the care and attention that these delicate, high yielding tobacco plants require.  On a daily basis, the farmers remove any weeds and pests that appear and generally keep the plants in tip top condition, without the use of pesticides or herbicides.  The air is very clean as the plants are grown at high altitude and with the cool nights and hot sunny days, the plants flourish.

Harvesting takes place around August time, when the plants are hung up to dry on wooden battens in barn-like structures. Nothing more is ever added.  It’s finely ground in a timely manner to preserve the delicate flavours of the natural tobacco leaves, whilst also maintaining the strength, freshness and green/brown colouration of the natural plant.  The resultant blends are typically classified into Light (Blue), Medium (Gold) or Hot (Red) Dokha varieties.

Explaining the Dokha buzz?

If you are reading this and thinking about trying Dokha for the first time, regular Dokha smokers will tell you the best time to smoke Dokha is first thing in the morning as the Dokha buzz will last longer and be more intense – this is because your Nicotine tolerance is low after sleeping.  How long the Dokha buzz lasts changes from person to person, but usually it will last between 10 – 30 seconds. If you smoke Dokha later in the day, or you smoke regularly throughout the day then your tolerance level also grows, and the ‘buzz’ will not be as intense as your first smoke of the day… so don’t go chasing the ‘buzz’!

Now that you have some inkling of the meaning of Dokha Tobacco, you will also need to know something about how to smoke it and what to smoke it in!

What is a Medwakh pipe?

Medwakh, sometimes spelled ‘Midwakh’, is a uniquely styled pipe only used to smoke Dokha Arabic tobacco. Although there are no rules around what makes a tobacco pipe a Medwakh, the style of a Medwakh is very distinctive. Most notably, the Medwakh pipe bowl tends to be much smaller than Western tobacco pipes as the Dokha itself is more finely ground and therefore less is needed to be smoked. They’re traditionally around 6inches long but can come in a whole range of shapes and sizes.  One of our most popular Medwakh pipes is called the Footlong – 12inches, for the exhibitionists out there!

A cotton air filter is put onto the end of the pipe to ensure that small particles of Dokha tobacco do not pass through to your mouth.  So long as you change your filter regularly, this technique helps to ensure a fresh smoking experience every time you smoke Dokha…

Classic Medwakh pipe design is heavily influenced by the culture and history of the region, evident in the materials used, colours and patterns.

How To Smoke Dokha?

Our short guide on how to smoke Dokha will show you everything you need to know to ensure you are experiencing it in the most rewarding way!

Detailed Guide on how to smoke Dokha tobacco from a Medwakh pipe. How To Smoke Dokha tobacco - A complete guide - Pipe smoking tutorialLet’s face it, most of us smoke Dokha for that unique feeling it gives us, also known as ‘the buzz’!

It’s always good for beginners to sit down for their first few Dokha sessions, as some blends pack a big punch. So please, sit down, relax and enjoy a great smoking experience – it’s also a good idea to stay hydrated while smoking Dokha. Have a glass of your favourite beverage, a sugary juice is recommended. Okay, now we are ready to smoke some Dokha!

First, pack the bowl of your Medwakh pipe with your favourite blend of Dokha and tamp the tobacco down. If it won’t stay lit, or if you can’t draw it through your Medwakh, then it’s probably packed too tightly, but that’s about the only limitation.

Breathe out, light the bowl and inhale normally and hold it for a few seconds – if you can, then take a second hit without exhaling the first, that’s the way to get the best result! When you finally exhale, you will be experiencing the Dokha buzz!

Cleaning up after a smoke

There are many reasons why you should clean your Medwakh pipe the right way every time:

  • cleaning your pipe helps to keep it in tip top condition
  • a clean pipe gives a tastier, fresher smoke
  • helps to make your pipe last longer than it otherwise would

It’s really important to take care of your Medwakh pipe. In reality, it shouldn’t take you too long to do, and it can considerably elongate the life of your Medwakh pipe. This is a bonus for you, and just by taking a little time to clean it, you will save yourself money and time overall. What’s more, cleaning your Medwakh pipe is the best way to absolutely guarantee you have the best possible smoke every single time.

TOP TIP:

If you have a Medwakh Pipe that is crafted from wood, you can use a drop of Olive oil on a piece of soft kitchen paper and gently rub along the shaft of the pipe to give it extra sheen. Under no circumstances allow any drops of the oil to come into contact with the inside of the bowl or the inside of the mouthpiece as the oil is greasy and has the potential to allow the tobacco particles to stick to the inside of the bowl or the mouthpiece…
