Dokha Accessory Education
Choosing the perfect Medwakh pipe
Dokha accessory education starts with choosing the perfect Medwakh pipe, and adhering to the maintenance tips provided by Enjoy Dokha, to maximise its longevity and value. The small bowl size and straight stem means that filling your Medwakh is as simple as dipping it in your Dokha bottle and tamping the bowl down with a finger or tamper tool. From there, you’re good to go; enjoy your Dokha buzz!
This simplicity adds to the appeal of the pipe. The pipe’s small size also makes it very portable, allowing users to take it with them wherever they go.
The Medwakh’s compact size and portability reflects the nomadic lifestyle of its origin.
Medwakh Pipe Mastery
A synopsis of the different styles of Medwakh Pipes (wood types, shapes artisan vs factory), their various lengths and what that means for your smoking experience. When it comes to enjoying Dokha tobacco, the Medwakh pipe is not just a tool; it is an essential companion that enhances the smoking experience. The term ‘Medwakh’ is synonymous with the Arabic word for ‘Tube’ or ‘Pipe’.
Factors to Consider when choosing your Medwakh
When selecting a Medwakh pipe, consider the following factors to ensure you get the best value and experience:
- Material: Wood and bone are preferred for their traditional feel and flavour retention. However, if you prioritise durability and ease of maintenance, metal or ceramic may be better choices.
- Size and Shape The size of the Medwakh should fit comfortably in your hand and pocket. Longer pipes can cool the smoke more effectively, while shorter ones are more portable. The average length of a Medwakh pipe is 6inches.
- Craftsmanship: Look for a well-crafted pipe with smooth finish and no visible cracks or blemishes. Handmade pipes can sometimes have small blemishes as that is the nature of their individuality and unique designs that are reflected in both the materials used and the skill of the crafter.
- Aesthetics: Choose a design that appeals to you, whether it’s a simple, classic look or something more ornate. The pipe’s appearance should enhance your enjoyment.
Why Materials Matter
The material of your Medwakh pipe significantly impacts your smoking experience and the pipe’s longevity. Here’s why some materials are preferred:
Wood Medwakh pipes
Traditional and widely used, wood offers a natural aesthetic and is often hand-carved. Hardwood types like briar, cherry, maple, oak, and rosewood are popular for their durability, heat resistance and flavour preservation when used as smoking tools. These woods are popular choices where strength and durability are an essential component to mitigate impact, scratching or denting. These woods are a top choice for many Medwakh artisans and Dokha smoking enthusiasts.
Bone Medwah Pipes
The art of crafting various styles of smoking pipes from animal bone dates back centuries and some of these traditional techniques are still in evidence today.
Medwakh pipes made from animal bone are known for their unique designs and historical appeal. The UAE and countries with similar cultural backgrounds fashion basic Medwakh pipes from these materials.
Nowadays Bone Medwakhs are typically handcrafted to a smooth finish, whilst commissioned Bone Medwakhs are often carved with cultural symbols.
Metal Medwakh Pipes
Stainless steel pipes are the ideal choice for smoking because of their resistance to corrosion and oxidation. They won’t rust or deteriorate and they are easy to clean out build up of old tobacco flakes and tar.
Aluminium pipes are durable and easy to clean. Aluminium is the preferred material used by Loupolus Pipes who are considered to be Masters of Medwakh engineering. Loupolus Pipes utilise ‘food grade’ aluminium so as not to impair the taste of your tobacco and are exclusive to Enjoy Dokha in the UK.
Ceramic Medwakh Pipes
These pipes are midweight, colourful, and offer a new fangled look. Enjoy Dokha recently added six colourful Ceramic Medwakh Pipes to our website.
High-quality, properly glazed ceramic is inert and non-reactive, making it a very safe material for smoking. There’s minimal risk of chemical reactions or emissions, assuming the ceramic is lead-free and has been fired correctly.
Due to the nature of the materials used in the manufacture of these colourful Ceramic Medwakh Pipes, Enjoy Dokha do not recommend ‘tapping’ the old tobacco flakes out of the bowl. Instead, we recommend the use of a fabric or bristle pipe cleaner to avoid potential cracking along the stem of the pipe or breakage of the bowl.
Medwakh Pipe Maintenance
Proper maintenance is crucial to ensuring your Medwakh pipe provides a consistent, enjoyable experience and lasts for years. Here’s how to care for your Medwakh:
Cleaning Techniques
- Regular Cleaning After each use, remove any leftover tobacco and residue from the bowl. A small fabric pipe cleaner or bristle pipe cleaner is useful for this. Gently push a pipe cleaner from the mouth piece down the stem of the pipe to prevent build-up of stale tobacco flakes and tar. You can bend the end of a fabric pipe cleaner to clean the bowl out or use a ‘cotton’ bud.
- Deep Cleaning: For a deep cleanse, especially if the pipe has a strong odour or significant build-up, use a product such as Falcon pipe cleaning spray. Due to flight restrictions we are unable to offer this product outside of the UK. Soak a cotton swab/fabric pipe cleaner in isopropyl alcohol and clean the interior of the pipe – bowl and stem. Rinse thoroughly to ensure no alcohol remains, as it can affect the taste of your Dokha, but most of all ensure that the pipe is totally dry (bowl and inside stem) before attempting to re-use it. Rubbing alcohol, isopropyl alcohol or surgical spirit are the exact same thing and are easily available on the High Street.
Avoiding Common Pitfalls
- Overheating: Avoid overheating your pipe, as this can cause cracking, especially in wooden pipes. Allow the pipe to cool between uses.
- Moisture: Ensure your Medwakh is completely dry before storing it. Moisture can lead to mold or wood warping.
- Physical Damage: Handle your pipe with care to avoid dropping it. Store it in a padded case or pouch in a safe place to prevent damage. Enjoy Dokha do not recommend ‘tapping’ out old tobacco from Bone or Ceramic Medwakh pipes as this tradition can crack or break the pipe.
Maximizing Value and Longevity
To get the best out of your Medwakh, follow these tips:
- Rotation: Use multiple pipes in rotation. This allows each pipe to rest and dry out between uses, extending its lifespan.
- Proper Storage: Store your Medwakh in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. This helps prevent warping and cracking.
- Quality Filters: Use high-quality pipe filters to reduce tar and nicotine intake and keep your pipe cleaner for longer. Replace filters regularly (10-15 smokes) to maintain a smooth smoking experience.
Investing in Quality
Investing in a high-quality Medwakh pipe may seem costly initially, but it pays off in the long run. A well-crafted pipe made from premium materials will not only enhance your smoking experience but also last longer, providing better value for your money.
The Global Perspective on Medwakh Pipes
Medwakh pipes are crafted worldwide, with notable production centres in the UAE, India, Iran and Turkey. Each region brings its unique touch to the design and materials used:
- UAE: Known for traditional, hand-carved wooden and bone Medwakhs, reflecting the cultural heritage of Dokha smoking across the Middle East.
- India: Produces a variety of Medwakh pipes, often using exotic woods and intricate designs that appeal to collectors and enthusiasts.
- Iran: Quality – they don’t compromise on the quality of any of the materials that they craft Medwakh pipes from – durable woods and quality craftmanship whatever the materials utilised.
- Turkey: Famous for its elaborate and artistic Medwakhs, often using metal and acrylic for durability and style.
The Anatomy of a filter
How filters work, how they differ and how to choose the bet one for you
The information provided in this section is only for Medwakh pipe users and basically there are three types of filters:
- Cotton Air Filters – These filters either contain a layer of cotton fibres or a small cylindrical sponge designed to trap tobacco particles and pollutants from entering your mouth. The outer case is usually made from plastic. These can come in a variety of colours such as blue, red, green, black, brown or white, depending on the manufacturer. The preferred colours appear to be white, black or brown.
- Charcoal Filters – The charcoal content of the filter is to contain tobacco flakes and tar residue from entering your mouth. The outer case is usually made of plastic in a variety of colours, usually black, brown or white.
- Dr. Pearl Filters – these are specialised filters in so far as they are used with the Zephyr and Loupolus Medwakh pipe, exclusive to Enjoy Dokha in the UK. They contain heat resistant ceramic caps with special pore structure for a reduction of harmful substances by means of charcoal pellets. There are TWO colours on the filter – the ‘white’ end should be placed towards the bowl of the Medwakh and the ‘blue’ end towards the stem/mouth. If you get this the wrong way round this will impede the air flow and could damage your pipe.
Pipe Cleaners
How do Bristle Pipe Cleaners differ from Fabric Pipe Cleaners
They both have the same function – the cleaning of the bowl and the stem of your Medwakh pipe. The Bristle pipe cleaner can be washed in warm soapy water and re-used, so it could prove to be more cost effective in the long run. If you do decide to wash the Bristle pipe cleaner, please ensure that it is completely dry before re-using to avoid impairing air flow to your smoke.
Metal 3 in 1 Pipe Cleaner
This is a ‘nifty’ little tool that has 3 main functions:
- Scooping tool – cleaning out the old tobacco flakes and any residual cinders from the bowl.
- Stem tool – when pushed down the stem of the pipe this tool helps air flow by clearing any flakes that may become lodged along the stem caused by moisture.
- Tamper tool – the tamper tool is critical to your smoking experience as tamping the tobacco helps with even burn so it doesn’t require re-lighting. If the tobacco is tamped properly and with the right pressure and draw on the pipe you can usually revive combustion.
If you consider how a Barista coffee maker grounds their coffee beans, they have a little ‘tamper gizmo’ that tamps the ground beans evenly to ensure correct water flow through the ground beans for the correct strength of coffee – this is the same principle why you should use this 3 in 1 tamper tool to ensure even burn of the Dokha in your Medwakh pipe. Do not over tamp the tobacco or put too much tobacco in the bowl as this can affect air flow and even burn.
